I love to watch his style and even though he is usually working on someone else's behalf, it must have been fun for him to outwit so many bad guys. I thought Houston's character appeared so dour primarily because she was a petite, rather unimpressive woman trying to make it as a geologist.

Also, she lost her grandfather and boyfriend and was suppressing her grief, which makes people act hard and aloof. The ending was touching with her finally succumbing to her grief and Jimmy sweetly and tenderly checking on her.
